Postal surveys
Quality responses at a lower price
The internet pervades the 21st century. But postal surveys are still a valuable research technique. You need to use incentives and reminders carefully. But postal survey response rates and quality of response are often better than other surveys. However generally, they cost only a fraction of the amount compared with face-to-face or telephone surveys.
Why do postal surveys provide such great value?
As with online surveys, postal surveys offer people time to consider questions. They can answer when it’s convenient to them. You can also include stimulus material such as packaging photos. With a postal survey, people can refer to other material and talk with other household members if required.
A truly random sample
It’s much easier to contact a random sample of the population through the post compared with face-to-face methods. By its very nature, face-to-face sampling inevitably tends to cluster in areas of larger populations such as towns and cities.
Reach those without internet or email
It could be that your target audience don’t really use email or only have limited access to the internet. A thoughtful, well-written survey received through the post is the perfect way to contact them.

Our academic team at Northumbria have worked with PCP for seven years now, and I have always been thrilled with the service provided. What initially started as me requesting PCP to collect some data on my behalf has become a wider partnership which many academics take advantage of.
PCP have always been swift and reliable. Irrespective of the complexity of our requests these are handled with ease, providing credible data in good time and in a very accessible format. Their work has enabled multiple staff to achieve some very prestigious academic publications which is testimony to the rigour of PCP’s work. I would not hesitate to recommend them to any other academics looking for a cost-efficient means of accessing representative data.
Dr David Hart, Associate Professor in Marketing, Northumbria UniversityI’ve been using PCP for more than 15 years and have always been impressed by their professional service, attention to detail and flexibility. The team regularly goes out of their way to help meet tight deadlines and offer valuable advice.
